Championing the cause to defeat summer learning loss and giving every child an opportunity to succeed is the very foundation of Nia Cultural Center. Our scholars participate in an engaging literacy and character building program offering them valuable educational tools and life skills that help them grow in the classroom, now and beyond. Our valued scholars participate in a meaningful six-week program based on 3 life-enhancing components: literacy skills that ignite their passion for reading; character strengths needed to make good decisions; and connection to a broader community that believes in them.
THERE ARE FIVE CORE COMPONENTS OF FREEDOM SCHOOL
The Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom Schools®, a six week, full day program for students in grades K -12 that seeks to build strong, literate, and empowered children prepared to make a difference in themselves, their families, communities, nation, and the world. By providing summer reading enrichment for children who might otherwise not have access to books, the program plays a much needed role in helping to curb summer learning loss and close achievement gaps. The Nia Cultural Center’s CDF Freedom School assists and reinforces the efforts of school districts, libraries, families, and students to curb summer learning loss and close achievement gaps.
